The A’s have claimed minor league first baseman Nate Freiman off waivers from the Astros, the team announced.

In a corresponding move, reliever Fernando Rodriguez was placed on the 60-day DL. Rodriguez will undergo Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the entire 2013 season.

Freiman hit .278 with a home run and seven RBI in 19 games during Spring Training with the Astros.

He spent last year in Double A, where he hit .298 with 24 home runs and 105 RBI in 137 games. Judging by his minor league statistics, Freiman has progressed every single year in terms of level (A-, A, A+, AA) and has maintained a consistent batting average of above .290. His power numbers have increased each season as well.
