Cal has had a great season, and they’re poised to extend it against a team they want revenge against: UNLV.
The Rebels beat Cal by a point in December, and Cal is trying to get revenge in San Jose, which makes the tournament game practically a home contest for the Bears. Cal is a No. 12 seed, while the Rebels had a great season and secured a fifth seed. Justin Cobbs and Allen Crabbe, two star guards, lead the Bears, while star forward Anthony Bennett leads UNLV.
How will the key contest end? Can Cal keep their season going with an upset? Find out with updates here.
That’s it from us! Stay tuned for a full recap here on Golden Gate Sports and thanks for tuning in! See you when the Bears play Saturday!
The Pac-12 went 3-0 today. Arizona thrashed Belmont (they play either New Mexico or Harvard), Oregon dominated Oklahoma State (they play St. Louis).
#Cal advances to Round of 32. One more Bay Area team plays tomorrow: @uopacific huge underdogs vs. Miami
— Golden Gate Sports (@goldenbaysports) March 22, 2013
Well, at least Cal and St. Mary’s won a game!
There’s nothing like March, and Cal gets to enjoy the thrills of this incredible month for at least two more days! The Bears played great D and held on for a sloppy 64-61 W.
1. Allen Crabbe. Crabbe scored 19 (7-for-16), grabbed eight boards and dished out five assists. He was 4-for-5 from the line and made his big shots.
2. Robert Thurman. Thurman stepped up and scored 12, lighting up the crowd with some great dunks. Thurman was 6-for-7 from the field.
3. Justin Cobbs. Despite missing some shots (4-for-13) and some free throws (2-for-5) he put up 13 and got the ball down low for some thunderous dunks (6 assists).
Three stars now…
Cal was 7-for-16 from the line, but some big dunks and nice passing allowed them to keep their lead. The fact that UNLV shot just 31.7 percent is also crazy.
Very poor officiating. RT @kpelton: Non-calls like that encourage hard intentional fouls, which nobody wants.
— Dave Flemming (@FlemmingDave) March 22, 2013
Don’t know about that. Cal definitely struggled at the end, though. They will practice free throws on Friday!
Cal wins, even though Solomon misses both! The Bears are on to the Round of 32!
Boy, nothing beats March.
Thank you CAL! Still only 1 loss today.
— Omari Warren (@MrOmariWarren) March 22, 2013
It’s not over yet. Solomon misses another one.
Foul on UNLV with 0.7 seconds left after Solomon steps up and steals the deep inbounds! One of two free throw makes will seal the deal!!!
Crabbe got both!
Crabbe drains the first shot with 1.6 seconds left. He’s likely going to try and miss, but we’ll see.
Could have been called, but Crabbe is on the line instead.
Crabbe is fouled after UNLV fails to with 1.5 seconds left! Two free throws for him and no timeouts for UNLV!
UNLV tries to and does make the shot. Cal will inbound up 62-61.
Marshall makes the first shot. UNLV might intentionally miss.
With 6.5 seconds left, Cal fouls. Anthony Marshall is back on the line. This game is crazy.
Cobbs hits the second shot.
Everybody involved in this Cal-UNLV game is staying after to practice free throws
— SportsNation (@SportsNation) March 22, 2013
“How many free throws do you think we can miss and still win?” – Cal
— Peyton’s Head (@PeytonsHead) March 22, 2013
Missed again. Is it a game or something?
Cobbs has it and is fouled with eight seconds left. He has a chance for redemption after missing two of three.
Roll On You Bears!! #Cal
— Justin Forsett (@JForsett) March 22, 2013
The alumni support is there! 61-59.
The first shot rolls on the rim and misses!!! What a crazy game!
Montgomery just froze his own free-throw shooter? Shooting to make it a two-possession game? After all of my Monty compliments…
— Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) March 22, 2013
Yeah, that was crazy.
Cal fouls with 9.8 seconds left. UNLV will have free throws.
The second shot is…no good.
Change the channel quickly to see the last 13.3 seconds of the California vs. UNLV game on truTV #MarchMadness
— March Madness TV (@MarchMadnessTV) March 22, 2013
I don’t know why you’d watch another game.
#Albany over #Duke tomorrow, get your popcorn ready. #UpsetCity
— Zack Pumerantz (@zpumerantz) March 22, 2013
Don’t go too far…
Remember, Marquette was down 5 with :30 left and still won. UNLV now down 2, 14.4 left thanks to Cal missed FTs …
— Jason McIntyre (@TheBigLead) March 22, 2013
Cobbs HAS to make the second shot. He’s 86 percent from the line.
First free throw by Cobbs is drilled! Timeout by Cal and the Bears lead 61-58 with 13.3 seconds left.
Cal in full Davidson mode. TruTV right now.
— Jonah Keri (@jonahkeri) March 22, 2013
Very true…
#UNLV hanging in there…
— Zack Pumerantz (@zpumerantz) March 22, 2013
60-58 now…wow.
UNLV can get a three-point play after a board on a missed three. UNLV has a great chance…terrible job by Cal.
3 straight Cal misses. They aren’t closing.
However, Wallace has two shots. Two would be big.
UNLV with a layup after another Cal miss. Wallace to the line with a one-and-one. He is just 55 percent from the line…
Crabbe gets his own rebound with NOBODY else attempting to get the board! Wastes five seconds and gets another one-and-one!
Buckets #Cal
— Gabe Zaldivar(@gabezal) March 22, 2013
40 seconds left now! Crabbe has a one-and-one.
UNLV doesn’t foul and Cobbs gets it to Solomon for the slam! 60-53 Cal and it’s Cal ball after a UNLV foul!
Also, Montana and Syracuse play next in San Jose on TruTV, if you will be watching that. The winner of Cal-UNLV will play the winner of Syracuse-Montana.
1:03 left after a Cal timeout. Looked like UNLV was going to and is going to foul.
UNLV is losing, and so is my bracket. #Ugh
— Lucas Sheiner (@LucasSheiner) March 22, 2013
Even my bracket could be messed up.
So nobody can touch a guy if he brings the ball high and is jumping for a lay-up. Silliness.
— Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) March 22, 2013
Luckily for the Bears, it didn’t matter much. Just 1:12 left!
Bennett misses by a lot and it’s Cal ball! Only one point for UNLV on the flagrant, so the call didn’t matter much.
First free throw is no good! One more.
It is a flagrant…not good.
That better not be a Flagrant 1. #Cal
— Peyton’s Head (@PeytonsHead) March 22, 2013
That was not an excessive foul. Nasty? Yes. But he was playing the ball.
— Gabe Zaldivar(@gabezal) March 22, 2013
Hard foul on Cal. Could be a flagrant.
Timeout after Crabbe couldn’t inbound it. 2 left for the Bears with 2:07 left and a 58-52 lead!
A HUGE rebound by Solomon after a UNLV miss! 2:08 left and Cal ball!
58-52 with just over 2 mins left!
Crabbe is 81 percent from the line, and he made both!
UNLV has one timeout, largely because of its sloppy play.
Crabbe to the line after the timeout. 2:24 left!
Bennett with a huge shot to make it 56-52. 2:30 left.
Robert Thurman elbowing in for game mvp honors RT @calmensbball With 4:18 to play here at @hppavilionsj, Cal leads UNLV 54-48
— Pac-12 Conference (@pac12) March 22, 2013
Thurman’s 12 points have come on shots that have traveled a total of 13 inches
— Ray Ratto (@RattoCSN) March 22, 2013
And he has 12 points on shots that have absolutely electrified the crowd.
Thur-man-ATOR!!!!!!! #GoBears #Yes
— Kate Scott (@katetscott) March 22, 2013
i attribute much of my adult weight gain to #Cal sporting finishes like this one.
— Gabe Zaldivar(@gabezal) March 22, 2013
It’s been closer than it should be considering how poorly UNLV is playing.
A fastbreak layup by Wallace is missed and UNLV gets a crucial transition bucket to save themselves. 3:33 left as Cal loses a chance to seal the deal…
Thurman stops down low and dunks it again! He has Cal’s last eight!
#MarchMadness Robert Thurman is killing UNLV. Isn’t that the same guy that beat Kentucky?
— Peyton’s Head (@PeytonsHead) March 22, 2013
Thurman is performing incredibly well down low with 10 big points.
Anthony Marshall hits both FTs and it is 54-48 Cal. Double bonus for UNLV and Cal calls timeout.
Not sure I have ever seen a worse offensive stretch than what UNLV is throwing out there. Impossibly bad
— Dave Flemming (@FlemmingDave) March 22, 2013
Give credit to Cal. They’re forcing rushed shots with little time on the shot clock.
Cal has blocked five UNLV shots, though given Rebels’ shooting, can’t imagine why they bother
— Ray Ratto (@RattoCSN) March 22, 2013
Yeah, 28.3 percent isn’t great.
Thurmond with the slam! The crowd is fired up and it’s 54-46!
A drought of over 11 mins without a field goal for UNLV ends with a put back. UNLV is down just six with less than 5 minutes.
Thurmond with a big block, and UNLV steps out of bounds.
Cal is shooting over 45.8 percent this half (11-for-24).
A big three by UNLV was…missed! UNLV is shooting 16.7 percent this half.
The first of two shots was missed by UNLV, and the second was made. 52-44 with 6:40 left.
UNLV is in the bonus, but they are just 9-for-15 from the charity stripe. UNLV missed its last one-and-one.
Thurmond puts back Crabbe’s miss with a MONSTROUS slam! 52-43 as Cal has its largest lead of the night!
Missed free throw by UNLV. Still 50-43.
Cal is actually 5-for-11 from downtown, or about 45.5 percent.
Cal is shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from downtown.
Defense wins round-of-64 games #cal
— Gabe Zaldivar(@gabezal) March 22, 2013
Cal has played some nice defense. You know that when your opponent is shooting 28.6 percent.
Dave Rice is a man who has never coached against a zone in his life. What an embarrassing performance in the 2nd half by UNLV
— Jason McIntyre (@TheBigLead) March 22, 2013
With 7:33 left and the Bears up 7, it might be too late to make adjustments. But it’s definitely not too late for a Rebel win.
UNLV 3-for-16 this half. No amount of grousing about Cal not getting calls will change that
— Ray Ratto (@RattoCSN) March 22, 2013
After a Bear steal, the Bears got an O board and have the ball now.
Robert Thurmond with the slam!
Timeout with 8:46 left.
The quality of play in the UNLV-California game right now is beyond bad.
— David Aldridge (@davidmaldridge) March 22, 2013
Alright, it isn’t great.
Watching Cal/UNLV attempt to play basketball, my dad: “Is there a way for both teams to lose?”
— Garrett Jochnau (@GarrettJochnau) March 22, 2013
The Bears are playing well. UNLV, not so much. Under 30 percent now.
Cal is just 1-for-2 from the line. Crabbe traveled on the last play.
Cal almost lost the rebound on the missed free throw, but it went out of bounds.
Another foul on Cal, but it’s not on Cal. Richard Solomon, who has nine, is on the bench with four fouls. 9:48 left and it’s 48-43.
UNLV is somehow 30.4 percent from the floor. They are getting some good looks, though. 48-42 after two free throws from UNLV.
UNLV with too many offensive rebounds. Two free throws is the result.
Cal ball on a questionable out-of-bounds call. Crabbe is in the game with three fouls.
UNLV 25 percent in the second half.
Cal has weak points, too, but UNLV clearly doesn’t know what they are or what to do about them.
— Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) March 22, 2013
Umm…we’ll just say the Bears are doing well. 11:26 left. The winner plays Syracuse or Montana.
Very strong performance by Cal so far. Coolly dicing up UNLV at all its weakest points.
— Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) March 22, 2013
And, the Bears have somehow out-rebounded UNLV (27-25).
I can’t remember the last time 11 & 12 seed from same conference both won their opening game. Oregon already won. Cal has UNLV on the ropes
— Jason Marcum (@UK_Fans) March 22, 2013
Pac-12 is not appreciated. Arizona is beating up on Belmont (62-43) and Oregon blew out Oklahoma State.
Timeout on the floor. Cal’s up 48-40 and in the drivers seat in San Jose, basically making it a home game. Cobbs and Crabbe have combined for 26.
Cobbs drains a triple! 48-40 as Cal makes its 6th. UNLV misses a triple.
A missed dunk by UNLV!
Crabbe, who is on fire, just picked up his third foul. With 13:40 to play. #Cal
— Ann Killion (@annkillion) March 22, 2013
On a side note, it’s 45-40.
Crabbe’s third foul makes Montgomery’s eyebrows start stabbing his forehead
— Ray Ratto (@RattoCSN) March 22, 2013
3 free throws for Anthony Bennett, who averages 16.1 PPG. Made the first two.
Crabbe has 15! He’s fearless and he made a great floater on a relentless drive. 45-37 on Cal’s biggest lead of the game!
Cal has received 13 from Crabbe and 8 from Justin Cobbs, who had two points on a layup that was called as a goaltending.
41-37, actually. Allen Crabbe’s 3 was changed to a 2.
Welcome to our March Madness live blog! Cal leads UNLV 42-37 with 15:49 left.
