The 49ers have signed placekicker Phil Dawson, according to his Twitter account.
“I am humbled & thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career with my new team, the SF 49ers,” tweeted Dawson.
Dawson has spent his entire 14 seasons with the Browns. His best season came last year, when he finished second in the NFL with a 93.5 field goal percentage, making 29 of 31 field goal attempts. His longest made field goal was 53 yards and he drilled in seven from 50+. Dawson’s accomplishments earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl.
Dawson was considered to be the best kicker on the free agent market. He will replace David Akers in San Francisco, who was released earlier this offseason after a horrid season in 2012.
