Free Agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha Leaves 49ers to Visit Saints

Free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will visit with the Saints on Sunday, reports CSN’s Matt Maiocco.

Asomugha met with the 49ers earlier this week, and the latest word was that he was in “serious discussions” to sign with them.

However, this latest news means he has either chosen not to sign with the 49ers, or he is evaluating his other options before making a decision.

Bay Area fans may remember Asomugha for his time with the Raiders, when he was regarded by many as the best cornerback in all of football.

Drafted in the first round in 2003 by Al Davis, his accolades in Oakland include a three-time Pro Bowl selection, and four-time All Pro team membership. He was also the Raiders team MVP in 2006 and 2008.

However, in 2011, he departed from Oakland for Philadelphia, signing a five-year, $60 million contract. Asomugha struggled with the Eagles, and was released earlier this week.

Asomugha recorded 47 tackles and one interception in 16 games with the Eagles last seaso

Lets see there was Revis, S.Smith, Talib, Delmas, Reed, Woodson, Asomugha, these were a list of the DB’s the 49ers were really interested in, yes the media and their reliable sources ( about as reliable as Dumervils ex agents fax machine ) told the waiting 49er fans that they might get a cornerstone for a reliable secondary. Something the 49ers have been promising fans for over a decade now. Everyday a long chorus line of noteworthy DB’s would fly into SF. But Mr. Baalke could not make up his mind. Then there was an unceremonious blip on the NFL Network, Craig Dahl was released and within 48 hours Baalke had one of his old alumni Bison Buddies signed sealed and delivered.

Why in the future would any self respecting free agent pay for a flight to San Francisco to visit Baalke. Pretty soon people are not going to come to San Francisco to hear the same old song and dance.

Baalke in his first official year as GM 2011 came out and said; ” I’m not going to be an active member in this years free agency. This has been his third year in free agency and he still has yet to sign a notable free agent. Instead of signing Dahl maybe he should have rolled that cap room over to 2014 ? I really hope that Dahl works out, I’m keeping my fingers crossed, like I am for AJ Jenkins, Darius Fleming, Joe Looney, and the whole draft class of 2012, the problem is I’ve run out of fingers to keep crossed.
