49ers: Aldon Smith Underwent Surgery For Torn Labrum

49ers linebacker Aldon Smith underwent surgery for a torn labrum a few weeks ago, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The timetable for his return is unclear.

Smith did not miss any games in 2012, but was listed on the injury report from weeks 12-17 with a shoulder injury. He really struggled down the stretch, registering no sacks in the last six games when he had 19.5 sacks during the first ten games.

He told the Bay Area News Group on Feb. 15 that the injury was only a “bad stinger,” and even participated in MMA training with two-time Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier in San Jose that day.

“It’s doing good,” Smith said at the time. “I was on the mat, playing around and doing fine.”

Smith was the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 after winning the Rookie of the Year Award the previous season. He was selected by the 49ers as the seventh overall pick in 2011.
