The 49ers brought in free agent cornerback Charles Woodson for a marathon meeting session yesterday, but no contract was discussed.
Today, his agent said that Woodson had the 49ers as one of his top choices.
“He’s made it very clear that he wanted to go to a contender where he could make a difference and he wanted to win another Super Bowl ring,” Woodson’s agent, Carl Poston said on 95.7 The Game this afternoon. “So we’ve kind of narrowed down the teams that he wanted to talk to and San Francisco is clearly one of those teams.”
However, there still is a ways to go until a deal is reached.
“So, if the numbers are right, I’m assuming that Charles would want to pull the trigger with the 49ers,” he continued. “The ball’s really in their court in one regard, but we haven’t really talked yet. We haven’t talked numbers at all.”
A 14-year veteran, Woodson was drafted by the Raiders and spent eight seasons in Oakland before moving on to Green Bay. He was the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1998.
He has received numerous accolades throughout his career as an eight-time Pro Bowler, seven-time All-Pro member, and Super Bowl champion. Woodson was also the AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.
Woodson’s productivity has declined in recent seasons, however. He appeared in just seven games last, recording 25 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and one interception.
Woodson was released by the Packers earlier this offseason.
