49ers Sign Ian Williams to Two-Year Extension

The 49ers made a somewhat significant move today, signing nosetackle Ian Williams to a two-year extension worth $3.5 million.

This is a move made to potentially help offset the departures of Ricky Jean Francois and Isaac Sopoaga, who are both free agents, soh aving Williams long-term certainly will help.

Williams went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2011, but played well enough in the preseason to make the 49ers roster. He was used sparingly this season.

“We are very pleased to extend the contract of a young, talented player like Ian,” general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. “He will have the opportunity to continue to grow in our defense, and we look forward to his future development. Paraag (Marathe) and Drew deserve credit for working hard to put this deal together.”
