Broncos Take on Loyola Marymount: Game Preview

The Santa Clara Broncos host the LMU Lions tonight in a WCC battle at the Leavey Center.  The Broncos (20-9, 8-6 WCC) beat Portland on the road 75 – 63 last Saturday.  The last place Lions (8-20, 1-13 WCC) lost a Brack Buster game to Cal Poly 63 – 60 in San Luis Obispo, CA last Saturday.

Santa Clara is led by senior sharpshooter Kevin Foster (17.9 points per game), senior forward Marc Trasolini (15.2 ppg), and junior point guard Evan Roquemore (12.0 ppg).  Trasolini leads the Broncos in rebounding (7.8 rebounds per game), followed by reserve forward Yannick Atanga (6.3 rpg).  Roquemore leads SCU in assists with 5.5 assists per game, with Foster chipping in 4.4 apg.

The Broncos shoot 43.8 percent from the field, 36.2 percent behind the 3-point line, and 72.0 percent from the free throw line.

The Lions are led by gunner Anthony Ireland (20.4 ppg) and forward Ashley Hamilton (12.9 ppg).  Hamilton leads the Lions in rebounding (6.8 rpg), while Ireland and Alex Osborne both contribute 4.4 rpg each.  Ireland and Chase Flint both dish out 3.7 apg to lead the Lions.

LMU shoots 40.5 percent from the field, 33.6 percent behind the 3-point line, and 71.4 percent from the free throw line.

SCU will look to neutralize Ireland by helping out and double-teaming him on some possessions, and force him into low-percentage shots.  Roquemore may even face guard Ireland to prevent him from handling the ball.  Trasolini and Atanga will need to keep Hamilton off the boards, and limit the Lions to one shot per possession.

On offense, SCU’s front court will need to set solid picks to spring Foster for open 3-pointers.  Roque’s penetration will be key to creating scoring opportunities for Trasolini, Foster, and Raymond Cowels III.

Tip off is 8 pm Pacific time.
