Alex Smith is effectively a Kansas City Chief, but the details of the trade between the 49ers and Chiefs have still not been finalized.
According to former Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, “they are still working through some of the absolute details of what the compensation is.”
Pioli appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio to discuss the trade and spewed out a few insights.
“I think what happens in these trades, if you give up a pick for something or if you’re going to give up two picks, what’s been a new trend in the NFL is people generally kick picks back,” he said. “Because teams don’t like to see their, even if they are going to give up a higher pick they want to get something later in the draft so they at least have a volume of picks to have more opportunities.”
What he means is that by the Chiefs giving up a second round pick, it would be expected for the 49ers to give up a late-round pick to the Chiefs in return so that the “volume of picks” remains the same.
Pioli was the Chiefs GM from 2008-2012 and was fired earlier this offseason.
