Report: Alex Smith Closer to Being Traded to Chiefs For Draft Pick

A late night update on the Alex Smith situation…

Both the Sacramento Bee and ESPN are reporting that the 49ers are confident they can trade Smith, who has generated a legitimate amount of interest.

However, the Bee takes it a step further, saying that Smith “appears closer to leaving the 49ers” for the Kansas City Chiefs next month.

No trade can become official until March 12, when the NFL’s dealing period begins.

The Bee also reports that team officials have told others at the NFL Combine that they plan to have 15 picks in the draft this summer. The 49ers currently have 11 picks in the draft, with three more coming as compensation for losing free agents a year ago,  so the extra one would logically come via a trade for Smith.

A rumor surfaced on Sunday night that the 49ers would, in fact, acquire two draft picks from the Chiefs: a third-rounder (63rd overall) and a late-round pick. We cannot confirm this rumor, but it seems very plausible that the 49ers would be taking a third round pick in exchange for Smith.

Again though, it should be stressed that a deal is not complete.

Smith was the No. 1 overall pick in 2005 by the 49ers, but struggled mightily in his first couple seasons.

That all changed in 2011, when the 49ers brought in Jim Harbaugh as head coach. Smith flourished under Harbaugh, putting up career numbers and leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship game where they fell to the Giants.

He was their starting quarterback in 2012 until he suffered a concussion in Week 11, allowing Colin Kaepernick to take over and excel. Kaepernick led the 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl, while Smith watched from the sidelines.

We will have much more on this potential Alex Smith trade, and will alert you if and when it is officially announced.
