Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee is reporting that the 49ers do not have a trade in place for Alex Smith.

This comes a day after multiple sources indicated that a Smith trade to the Chiefs was “all but done,” and a rumor even surfaced that the 49ers would receive two draft picks from Kansas City.

A CBS Sports report on Sunday was the first to state that the 49ers had “effectively completed” a trade for Smith, but the team was not named.

Last week, head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed that the 49ers are looking to trade Smith.

“That will be a process that will play out: Alex Smith continuing to be a 49er or if a trade occurs in the next weeks or months, those are the two possibilities, the most likely possibilities,” Harbaugh told reporters at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Smith was the 49ers starting quarterback until he suffered a concussion in Week 11, allowing Colin Kaepernick to take over and excel. Kaepernick led the 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl, while Smith watched from the sidelines.
