With Oakland’s first game of the 2013 season being just a little more than a month away, it’s time to start thinking about the team’s starting lineup. This way, going into their first game on April 1 against the Seattle Mariners, Athletics fans will know what to expect. Let’s take a look at what players are expected to start at what positions.
The Oakland Athletics will have their starting outfielders returning from last season. This means that Yoenis Cespedes will be in left field, Coco Crisp will be in center, and Josh Reddick will be playing right field.
As I touched on in the article I wrote last week about the A’s off-season moves, the Athletics signed Hiroyuki Nakajima to play shortstop. They also signed Jed Lowrie from the Astros to play either second base or third, and it appears that he will be starting at third. Scott Sizemore will be playing second base and Brandon Moss will be playing first.
Pitcher and Catcher
Who is going to pitch against the Mariners isn’t certain yet. It will probably depend on a number of different factors including who Seattle is going to start on the mound. In any case, it will probably still be a few weeks before the A’s will start to make a decision about who they want on the mound for their first game.
John Jaso will be returning as the A’s catcher.
Seth Smith looks like he will be the designated hitter for the Athletics. Last season he batted .240 and had an on base percentage of .333. He also contributed with 52 RBI and 14 HR.
Here is a summary of who is expected to start at what position:

- CF: Coco Crisp
- 1B: Brandon Moss
- 2B: Scott Sizemore
- SS: Hiroyuki Nakajima
