The University of San Francisco Dons host the Pepperdine Waves tonight at War Memorial Gym in a WCC battle. The Dons (12-15, 5-9 WCC) edged LMU 61 – 59 in Los Angeles, CA last Thursday. The Waves (12-14, 4-9 WCC) lost to Santa Clara 70 – 60 on the road last Saturday.
The Dons are led by Cole Dickerson (14.7 points per game), Cody Doolin (12.4 ppg), De’End Parker (12.1 ppg), and Avry Holmes (7.6 ppg). Dickerson leads the Dons in rebounding with 9.4 rebounds per game, followed by Tim Derksen(3.8 rpg) and Doolin (3.1 rpg). Doolin is the leading playmaker with 5.7 assists per game.
USF shoots 45.1 percent from the field, 40.1 percent behind the 3-point line, and 67.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Waves are led by Lorne Jackson (13.8 ppg), Jordan Baker (11.7 ppg), and Stacy Davis (10.8 ppg). Davis leads the Waves in rebounding with 7.1 rpg, while Moriba De Freitas and Baker contribute 4.8 and 4.4 rpg, respectively. Baker leads the Waves with 3.1 apg.
The Wave shoot 44.4 percent from the field, 36.2 percent behind the 3-point line, and 69.7 percent from the free throw line.
The key for USF will be Doolin’s ability to penetrate and finish or dish to a cutting Dickerson. Parker must step up and knock down his perimeter jump shot as well as driving the lane and finishing. Dickerson’s forte is crashing the offensive boards for easy putbacks, which also opens up his perimeter game. On defense, expect the Dons to sag off and protect the lane until Pepperdine proves it can knock down its perimeter jump shots.
Tip off is 6 pm Pacific time.
