Pablo Sandoval had a full day’s workout sprinting from first base to home plate to score the go-ahead run in the Giants Cactus League opener against an Angels split-squad.
Down 1-0 in the fourth, Angel Pagan manufactured a run with a hit, stolen base, and scored on Sandoval’s single. Then, catching prospect Jackson Williams doubled to left, sending Sandoval all the way home.
“I think when I step on third base, home plate was moving away,” complained Sandoval.
Bruce Bochy cracked a joke about Sandoval’s efforts:
“We were kidding him, `It’s hard to carry that piano around,’” said Bochy.“Then it looked like he stopped and played a song.”
Wilson Valdez and Ricky Oropesa recorded the Giants other RBIs in a 4-1 victory over the Angels.
Miscellaneous:
- Ryan Vogelsong pitched two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and a walk.
- The winning pitcher was Chad Gaudin, who is trying to win a job as a long reliever.
