Newly-signed shortstop Hiroyui Nakajima made his debut in an A’s uniform on Sunday afternoon in the first game of Cactus League action.
Ryan Braun’s homer against starter Jesse Chavez propelled the Brewers to victory, but the talk of the day was Nakajima and how he feels in making the adjustments to the major leagues.
“The environment, the ambiance, it was just fantastic and it pumped me up,” Nakajima said through a translator.
He did admit to being “slightly nervous” in his American baseball debut. Nakajima, who has 11 years of professional baseball experience in Japan, went 0-2 with a walk and a nicely turned double-play with Jemile Weeks.
“I was also trying to observe how the baserunner was going to attack and slide into second base,” he described. “I understand that American base runners are very aggressive. While getting away from the slide I just wanted to make an accurate throw.”
