The University of San Francisco Dons survived an upset bid tonight by the Pepperdine Waves to win 64 – 58 at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (13-15, 6-9 WCC) won on the strength of Mark Tollefsen’s unexpected team-high 18 points. Cody Doolin scored 13 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Cole Dickerson scored 11 points and collected six rebounds. Reserve forward Frank Rogers also grabbed six rebounds in only 11 minutes on the court.
The Dons shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the field, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) behind the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (16-0f-24) from the free throw line.
Pepperdine was led by Nikolas Skouen (19 points), Stacy Davis (12 points), and Lorne Jackson (10 points), who struggled from the field shooting only 4-of-12. Davis cleaned up the glass with 13 rebounds, followed by Moriba de Freitas and Jett Raines with seven rebounds each. Davis had six assists, followed by Jordan Baker with four.
The Waves shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field, 34.8 percent (8-of-23) behind the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (6-0f-9) from the free throw line. The Waves held a rebounding advantage of 39 – 36, but the Dons won the game from the free throw line, making 16 to Pepperdine’s six.
The game was tight throughout the second half as the teams exchanged leads, with Pepperdine leading 49 – 38 with 10:18 left in the game. USF scrambled to take a 60 – 53 lead with 2:50 left, but the Waves would not quit, narrowing the lead to 60 -58 with 1:10 left. But the Dons closed the game out with two free throws by Tollefsen, and one each by Tim Derksen and Dickerson for the final margin.
