Mention the name Chris Culliver to a 49er fan and you will likely induce nothing but anger.
Mention Jacoby Jones’ 56-yard touchdown reception in the Super Bowl and you will likely hear a loud crash of something shattering a window.
It’s no big secret that the 49ers need some help in their secondary, as evidenced by their abysmal coverage of the Ravens during Super Bowl XLVII and during the NFC Championship game in Atlanta.
This notion was confirmed by Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, who reports the following from the NFL Draft Combine:
The 49ers spent much of the day checking with agents on the upcoming cornerback market, which will feature Aqib Talib, Leodis McKelvin, Greg Toler, Cary Williams, Sean Smith, Derek Cox, Quentin Jammer, Dominique Rogers-Cromartie and Michael Jenkins.
How much money they will have to dish out to these free agents depends on what they do with Alex Smith. Trading Smith and his $8.5 million salary would likely open up some cash to sign a cornerback.
