Sharks goaltending coach Wayne Thomas told CSN’s Kevin Kurz on Thursday that Antti Niemi played through a knee injury last season.

“If your knee is bothering you, that’s tough to do,” said Thomas. “It was, last year, and he’s healthy now, and I think he’s showing where he wanted to be last year, but couldn’t be.”

Last year ended in great disappointment for the Sharks, as they were knocked off in the first round of the playoffs by the St. Louis Blues.

Niemi certainly did not have his best season statistically in 2011-2012, going 34-22-9 with a 2.42 GAA.

This year, rejuvenated from the lengthy lockout, Niemi has compiled a minuscule 1.86 GAA through 12 games, and has been nothing but stellar for San Jose.
