49ers: Not a Lot of Alex Smith Suitors

Going in to the offseason, Alex Smith is projected to be a hot commodity for teams looking for a veteran, experienced quarterback whether it is via trade or free agency.

However, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that “there hasn’t been a real hot market” for Smith.

He also suggested that 49ers would be willing to give up Smith for a fourth-round pick.

The 49ers will first look to trade Smith, then will release him if they cannot find any suitors. It is highly unlikely that they want to pay a backup quarterback $8.5 million next season.

Smith was the 49ers starting quarterback until he suffered a concussion in Week 11, allowing Colin Kaepernick to take over and excel. Kaepernick led the 49ers all the wayto the Super Bowl, while Smith watched from the sidelines.
