The 49ers are undecided on the future of backup quarterback Alex Smith.
GM Trent Baalke had reportedly had dinner with Smith and his wife to get a better understanding of Smith’s future.
“Are we going to trade him for sure? No, that hasn’t been decided,” Baalke said.
Smith was the 49ers starting quarterback until he suffered a concussion in Week 11, allowing Colin Kaepernick to take over and excel. Kaepernick led the 49ers all the wayto the Super Bowl, while Smith watched from the sidelines.
Should the 49ers decide to keep Smith, they would owe him $8.5 million and are therefore unlikely to pay that much for a backup. The logical step appears to be trading him, and if that doesn’t work out, releasing him so he can find a starting job elsewhere.
