Spartans Bid For Comeback Falls Short

The San Jose State Spartans lost to the New Mexico State Aggies 67 – 57 in a WAC game at the Event Center.  The Spartans (9-15, 3-10 WAC) mounted a spirited second half comeback bid after a lackluster first half where they trailed the Aggies (18-8, 12-2 WAC) 38 – 25.   The visiting Aggies featured a balanced attack, led by Daniel Mullings (15 points), Bandja Sy (13 points), Sim Bhullar (10 points), and Renaldo Dixon (19 points).  Dixon had a monster game on the boards with 14 rebounds, while Sy grabbed nine rebounds.  Sy and Terrel de Rouen dished out five assists each.

The Spartans were led by Xavier Jones with 17 points, while Chris Cunningham scored 11 points, and David Andoh chipped in eight points.  Cunningham and Andoh grabbed six rebounds each.  Jones dished out four assists, and DJ Brown dished out three assists.

The Aggies shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) behind the 3-point line, and 62.5 percent (15-of-24) from the free throw line.  However, they out-rebounded the Spartans 43 – 27.

The Spartans shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the field, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) behind the 3-point arc, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the charity stripe.

The difference in the game was the battle of the boards, as the Aggies crashed the offensive boards and converted more second-chance scoring opportunities.

The Spartans host Denver Saturday, February 16 at the Event Center.  Tip off is 7 pm Pacific time.
