Oscar Pistorius, a South African double-amputee who participated in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, has allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend after mistaking her for an intruder.
Police have not clarified the woman’s relationship to Pistorious, but multiple reports from South African news outlets indicate that she is a 30-year-old model named Reeva Steenkamp, who is his girlfriend.
The incident happened early on Thursday morning at Pistorious’ home in Pretoria.
The victim was allegedly shot twice – in the head and the arm. Pistorious has been taken into custody and will appear in court later on Thursday,
Police released a statement saying that Pistorious is cooperating, and added, “We can’t comment on his emotional well-being, but he is traumatized after losing someone close to him.”
Pistorious, known as the “Blade Runner,” became renowned throughout the globe by becoming the first amputee to compete in the Olympics, running the 400 meters and was part of South Africa’s 4 x 400 relay team. He also has garnered six gold medals in the Paralympic Games.
