The University of San Francisco Dons were upset at home by the Portland Pilots 78 – 76 in a West Coast Conference game at War Memorial Gym. The Pilots (10-17, 3-9 WCC) combined an inspiring performance on the boards with a patient offense which found many open shots in the lane. The visiting Pilots were led by Kevin Bailey’s 18 points, but received significant contributions from Ryan Nicholas (15 points), Thomas van der Mars (14 points), and reserve Tanner Riley (11 points). Van de Mars and Nicholas controlled the glass with nine and seven rebounds, respectively, while Derrick Rodgers dished out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds.
The Dons (11-14, 4-8 WCC) struggled to convert on enough shots close to the hoop, as many almost went in before rolling out. Cole Dickerson and Chris Adams scored 17 points each, with reserves De’End Parker tossing in 14 points, and Avry Holmes scoring 12 points. Cody Doolin chipped in 11 points and dished out six assists. On the boards, Frank Rogers led the Dons with seven rebounds followed by Dickerson’s six rebounds.
Portland shot a sterling 50.0 percent (32-of-64) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) behind the 3-point line, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free throw line. However, they out-rebounded the Dons 40 – 33.
USF shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) behind the 3-point arc, and 78,8 percent (15-of-19) from the charity stripe.
USF shot well behind the 3-point stripe and at the free throw line, but the Dons defense gave up too many open looks to Pilots players. To the Pilots credit, their passing game found cutting teammates in the paint, which they converted more often than not. Portland also knocked down some timely perimeter shots when USF came back in the second half to take a brief 55 – 54 lead. But the Pilots went on a run triggered by layups and closed out the game with clutch free throws and fast break finishes.
USF hosts Gonzaga Saturday, February 16 at War Memorial Gym. Tip off is 1:30 pm Pacific time.
