A’s closer Grant Balfour underwent successful surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee on Thursday, the team announced. His recovery is 4-6 weeks.
Word was sent out early this morning that Balfour would be having surgery today, but hopes to be ready by opening day.
“I feel good about getting it done now,” Balfour said. “It will allow me to get ready for Game 1 of the season. I knew the way I was feeling I wouldn’t have been able to pitch through it all season long.”
Balfour, who signed with the A’s before the 2011 season, became their closer midway through last season to replace the struggling Ryan Cook. He recorded 24 saves, along with a 2.53 ERA and 3-2 record.
Through eight seasons in the big leagues, Balfour has a career record of 27-14 and a 3.38 ERA.
