The Gaels face the Pilots at home today looking for their seventh straight win. At their last meeting, the Gaels dominated with an impressive defense performance. The Gaels held the Pilots to just 38 points on Jan 19th. When asked about the defensive performance, Beau Levesque said, “Our last game against Portland was a big step for us progressing defensively and we are looking forward to taking another leap forward in today’s game”.
Overall the Gaels are now 18-4 and 7-1 in the WCC. The Gaels sit in second place behind Gonzaga at 7-0. SMC has been unstoppable at home this season and stand at 12-0.
Offensively, four St. Mary’s players are averaging double-digit points per game. Matthew Dellavedova leads the pack with 16. Stephen Holt follows with 12.5. Brad Waldow is at 10.0 and Beau Levesque is at 10.5 off the bench. Levesque has averaged 21.9 minutes of solid play in his last several games. In total points per game the Gaels are ranked 16th in the country averaging 77.7. They are shooting 49.2% from the floor which puts them 10th in the nation. Look for a strong offensive performance from the Gaels this afternoon.
The Pilots this season are 8-15 overall and are 1-7 (ninth place) in the WCC. They have lost their last five straight including St. Mary’s. Portland has been struggling on offense. Against St. Mary’s, they shot just 23.3% from the floor. In their last five games the Pilots have averaged a dismal 54.4 points per game. For the season they are averaging 60.1 points which puts them in 320th place across the nation. The Pilots will have to step up their offense if they have any hope of upsetting the Gaels.
Leading the way for the Pilots is Ryan Nicholas averaging 13.3 points per game. Kevin Bailey is next with 11.6. Derrick Rogers is averaging 4 assists. From the floor, Portland has been averaging 41.1 % ranking them 276th nation-wide. Watch for Portland to attempt some quick offensive points to stay competitive today.
