On Monday, NBC Sports reported that 49ers’ starting-turned-backup quarterback Alex Smith would request his release before free agency so he could be free to sign with any team. The other option would be fore the 49ers to trade him, not giving him control over his future.
Today, Smith debunked that report at media day during an interview:
I don’t know where this stuff comes from. I’m focused on this game and helping this team win a championship and doing whatever I can do. That stuff can wait; there is plenty of time for that in a week.
Regardless of whether or not the it is true, it is all but a forgone conclusion that Smith will not be back with the 49ers in 2013. They will likely refuse to pay him $8 million to be a back up and he is unlikely to want to stay a backup.
But like Alex said, all this hoopla can wait for next week. The 49ers are playing in the Super Bowl in five days.
