It is a forgone conclusion that Alex Smith will not be a San Francisco 49er next season. The quarterback of the Niners is Colin Kaepernick, and there will no more controversy for a while in San Francisco.
The only questions that remain are: where will Smith be playing next season and how will the 49ers deal with the situation?
The first question will be left unanswered for a while, but the rumors have been swirling about him going to Kansas City, New York (Jets), Philadelphia, or Buffalo.
The second question may have been answered on Sunday night courtesy of NBC Sports, who is reporting that Smith is expected to seek his release before the start of free agency?
Why? So he has the freedom to sign with any team he wishes to.
On the flipside, he will lose the $8.5 million that he is still under contract for should the Niners trade him to another team.
It appears, however, that Smith wants control over his future and if the Niners have any kind of respect for his professionalism and classiness during his time in San Francisco, they will grant him his release before free agency.
