Weeks, Sizemore to Compete for A's Second Base Job

Second base was one of the weakest offensive positions for the Oakland A’s in 2012.

They started the season with Jemile Weeks, but he performed so poorly that he was sent down to the minors. Cliff Pennington didn’t fare any better, and he was traded to the Diamondbacks following the season.

So what’s the plan for 2013?

Manager Bob Melvin said at the A’s FanFest that second base with be an “open competition” between Weeks and Scott Sizemore.

Sizemore was traded to the A’s midway through the 2011 season, and hit .249 with 11 home runs in 93 games as the everyday third baseman.

However, a torn ACL suffered before the start of the 2012 campaign forced him to sit out the entire season.
