With both squads middling in conference play, the contest between Cal (11-7, 3-3 Pac-12) and Colorado should be interesting, to say the least. The Buffaloes (13-6, 3-4) host the Golden Bears at the Coors Events Center Sunday afternoon as we approach the middle of the conference season. The two teams are coming off of a win, and are looking to build some momentum to close out the first half of Pac-12 play.
In the standings, the Bears are a spot above the Buffs, but there is plenty of talent on the team that pushed Arizona into overtime earlier this season; they might have won if not for a questionable call near the end of regulation. Cal always has trouble with athletic teams, and Colorado is not lacking in this department.
To keep Coach Montgomery’s team in the game, Cal leading scorer Allen Crabbe is going to have to outplay Colorado leading scorer Spencer Dinwiddie. After a bit of a slump (by his standards), he lived up to his billing in the last game against Utah, scoring 23 points and shooting over 50% from the field. It should be interesting to see these two Southern Californians matchup. And, although he struggled a bit against the Utes, Tyrone Wallace has been a nice surprise this season, giving Cal a legitimate third option.
This is the only time the two teams play this season, and there will be a bit of a revenge factor in play as the Buffs knocked the Bears out of the Pac-12 tourney in 2012. Though Colorado holds the edge in athleticism, Cal has a better coach. Can Montgomery and his half-court offense take care of business? Tune in tomorrow to find out.
The game is on Fox Sports Net National at 12:30 PM PST.
