The San Jose State Spartans’ struggles continued on Saturday night as they were blown out 66-57 at home by the Texas-Arlington Mavericks.
Greg Gainey led all scorers with 17 for the Mavericks, while Chris Cunningham finished with a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) for the Spartans).
The Spartans shot a woeful 21.6 percent from the floor and 16 percent from 3-point range.
Texas-Arlington led early and pulled away midway through the first half, making three consecutive 3-pointers to take a 26-13 lead. The onslaught continued as the Mavericks pushed their lead to 18 at halftime.
San Jose State made their only run of the game early in the second half, going on a 10-0 to draw within 45-35 with 12:15 remaining.
But it was way too little and too late, as the Spartans would not score for the next six minutes, while the Mavericks went on a 15-0 run to lead by 25 points, cruising to victory.
The Spartans are now 9-11 overall and will face Seattle on Thursday.
