Business magnate and billionaire Ron Burkle met with NBA commissioner David Stern on Thursday, sources have told USA Today.
Burkle, along with 24-Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov, are very interested in putting forth a bid towards the counter-offer to buy the Kings and keep them in Sacramento.
The Sacramento Bee is reporting that during the meeting, facilitated by mayor Kevin Johson, Burkle advocated for a new Kings’ arena downtown.
Last week, the sale of the Kings to a Seattle-based investment group led by Chris Hansen was agreed upon and sent to the NBA Board of Governors for approval.
However, Sacramento has not given up on its efforts to keep the team, and Johnson has been actively recruiting investors.
Stern promised Johnson an opportunity to make his case to the Board of Governors before the sale of the Kings is finalized.
This meeting between Burkle and Stern shows two things:
- Burkle is serious and invested in keeping the Kings in town.
- The NBA recognizes and has legitimized Sacramento’s efforts to keep the Kings.
