The San Jose State Spartans host the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs tonight at the Event Center. The Spartans (9 – 8, 3 – 4 WAC) have been playing without leading scorer James Kinney and starting forward Louis Garrett, which have hampered their scoring opportunities. The Spartans lost to New Mexico State in Las Cruces, NM 70 – 53 last Saturday. The Bulldogs (16 – 3, 7 – 0 WAC) defeated Seattle 78 – 71 at Ruston, LA last Saturday.
The Bulldogs are led in scoring by Raheem Appleby (14.4 points per game), Cordarius Johnson (10.1 ppg), Kenyon McNeail (8.7 ppg), and Kenneth Smith (8.0 ppg). Michale Kyser leads the Bulldogs in rebounding with 6.3 rebounds per game, followed by Smith (4.4 rpg) and Brandon Gibson (3.8 rpg). Smith dishes out 5.1 assists per game to lead the Bulldogs.
Louisiana Tech shoots 41.0 percent from the field, 31.8 percent behind the 3-point line, and 69.6 percent from the free throw line. The Bulldogs average 73.5 ppg and 37.8 rpg.
If James Kinney and Louis Garrett remain inactive, the Spartans will lean heavily on Chris Cunningham (10.6 ppg, 8.5 rpg) to provide both offense and rebounding. DJ Brown will provide points and playmaking (9.1 ppg, 4.4 apg), with LaVanne Pennington (7.2 ppg) and Alex Brown (5.7 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.3 blocks per game) filling out the depth chart. Kinney’s scoring average of 20.6 ppg will be missed, as will Garrett’s 7.1 ppg.
The Spartans shoot 40.5 percent from the field, 32.6 percent behind the 3-point line, and 67.1 percent from the free throw line. San Jose State averages 66.9 ppg and 38.7 rpg.
With Kinney out, the Spartans must reduce the number of possessions in the game, play tough defense, hang around within striking distance near the end of the game, get the home crowd into the game, and hope they knock down a few shots to close out an upset victory.
Tip off is 7 pm Pacific time.
