There are “white whales,” and then there’s Larry Ellison.
The Sacramento Bee is reporting that Ellison is scheduled to meet with mayor Kevin Johnson, brokered by one of the Kings’ minority owners.
$525 million would seem like no big deal to Ellison, who is the third richest man in the United States with a net worth of $41 billion. The founder of Oracle was in the mix to buy the Warriors from Chris Cohan in 2010, but lost to Joe Lacob and Peter Guber.
If Johnson can convince Ellison to jump in and invest in the Kings, it would be a huge step towards convincing the NBA Board of Governors to vote down the current deal between the Maloofs and Chris Hansen’s Seattle-based group that would relocate the Kings to Seattle.
Both Johnson and Ellison have declined comment on the situation.
