Alex Smith has been the ultimate class act since Colin Kaepernick took over the reigns at starting quarterback for the 49ers. He has respectfully stood on the sidelines, watching Kaepernick lead the Niners to the Super Bowl.
So with his team now reaching the ultimate pinnacle in the sport, how does the backup feel?
“I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a little bittersweet,” Smith told the Sacramento Bee. “Yeah, I want to be out there. It’s what you work for coming into the season. That was the mindset. That was the goal for me.”
Smith suffered a concussion against the Rams in Week 11, prompting Kaepernick to take over and solidify himself as the starter. Despite the frustration he must be feeling, Smith continues to say the right things.
“It is a team sport and these are my teammates,” Smith said. “You go through so much together, especially these guys who have been here for a chunk of time. If you can’t be happy, there’s something wrong with you.
Smith will likely be playing elsewhere next season, but it would sure feel good if he was rewarded for his efforts last season and the first half of 2012 with a Super Bowl ring.
