The San Jose Sharks are nearing a deal with free agent Scott Gomez and an announcement could be made as soon as tomorrow.
Gomez is currently traveling and practicing with the Sharks on their road trip in Calgary and Edmonton, but has not signed a contract yet.
Head coach Todd McLellan has had nothing but nice things to say about Gomez.
“My interaction with him so far, he’s coming across as a very hungry player, a guy that would love to prove himself right before he proves everybody else wrong,” McLellan told the San Jose Mercury News, “and that’s a pretty strong motivator.”
Gomez was placed on waivers by the Montreal Canadiens last Wednesday, who will be held accountable for his $7.3 million salary.
The forward had a disappointing 2011-2012 season with Montreal, scoring two goals with nine assists in 38 games.
Gomez, who is 33, was a solid player for the Devils and Rangers for the first nine years of his career. He recorded 33 goals and 51 assists with the Devils during the 2005-2006 season.
