Kevin Johnson has his heavy hitters lined up to keep the Kings in Sacramento.
Sources have told USA Today that Mark Mastrov, the founder of 24-Hour Fitness, and billionaire Ron Burkle are in “serious talks” to put together a counter-offer to the deal reached between the Maloofs and the Seattle-based investment group earlier this week.
The report states that there are five owners in play, but Mastrov and Burkle are the most significant investors.
On Tuesday afternoon, Johnson announced that 20 investors have pledged $1 million towards a bid to buy the Kings, and that he is working on the “white whale,” or heavy hitter to offer a large sum.
It turns out that there are two heavy hitters in Mastrov and Burkle, and it looks like it will be up to them to save the future of the Kings in Sacramento.
