Twenty-five to thirty foot swells were seen at the Mavericks surfing competition near Half Moon Bay on Sunday.
Peter Mel of Santa Cruz eventually took home the $50,000 prize, winning the eighth annual Mavericks contest. He generously shared the pot among his six competitors.
This is the first contest since 2010, as the waves were not big enough the past two years.
Today, despite a 20-30 minute between the large waves and government officials prohibiting spectators from watching live for fear of environmental and safety concerns, witnesses describe the event as “exciting,” and cheered on the surfers at a festival that showed a live feed of the event.
