Dons Seek First WCC Win Against LMU: Game Preview

The University of San Francisco Dons are seeking their first WCC conference win of the season when they host the LMU Lions this afternoon at War Memorial Gym.  The Dons (7 – 11, 0 – 5 WCC) were ousted by Santa Clara 85 – 54 Thursday in War Memorial Gym.  LMU (8 – 10, 1 – 4 WCC) lost on the road to San Diego, 78 – 70, last Wednesday.

The Lions are led in scoring by Anthony Ireland (20.7 points per game), Ashley Hamilton (15.1 ppg) and Ayodeji Egbeyemi (10.7 ppg).  Hamilton (6.8 rebounds per game), Egbeyemi (5.8 rpg) and Ireland (5.2 rpg) are also the Lions’ leading rebounders.  Chase Flint is the Lions’ leading play-maker with 4.3 assists per game, followed closely behind by Ireland’s 4.2 apg.

The Lions shoot 42.7 percent from the field, 36.7 percent behind the 3-point arc and 71.9 percent from the free throw line.

Cole Dickerson averages a double-double (14,7 ppg, 10.6 rpg) to lead the Dons in both categories.  Cody Doolin, De’End Parker and Tim Derksen chip in 13.1 ppg, 12.8 ppg and 8.7 ppg, respectively.  Derksen also grabs 4.5 rpg, followed by Mark Tollefsen with 3.3 rpg.

The Dons shoot 45.3 percent from the field, 38.4 percent behind the 3-point line and 65.7% from the free throw line.

The Dons’ fortunes lie heavily on whether De’End Parker’s wrist has healed sufficiently, as he is the team’s leading perimeter threat, as well as all-around scorer on offense.  Since his wrist injury, the Dons have struggled to score, as opponents key on limiting Cole Dickerson’s scoring opportunities.  Cody Doolin must continue to run the halfcourt offense with dribble penetration, and without committing turnovers.

On defense, the Dons must defend the perimeter, as the trio of Anthony Ireland, Ashley Hamilton and Ayodeji Egbeyemi is deadly from 3-point distance.

Tip off is 1:30 pm Pacific time.
