Spartans Embarrassed in 73-37 Loss to Denver

The San Jose State Spartans lost convincingly to the Denver Pioneers 73 – 37 in a WAC match up in Denver.  Poor shooting led to no Spartans (9 – 8, 3 – 3 WAC) scoring in double figures, with Chris Cunningham and LaVanne Pennington sharing the scoring lead with eight points each.  Cunning also led the Spartans in rebounding with six.

The Spartans shot 28.0% (14-of-50) from the field, 20.0% (2-of-10) behind the 3-point line, and 53.8% (7-of-13) from the free throw line.

Chris Udofia and Brett Olson led the Pioneers (10 – 7, 6 – 1 WCC) with 15 points each.  Royce O’Neal led with 10 rebounds, followed by Chase Hallam with six.  O’Neale and Hallam both dished out five assists each, while Udofia blocked four shots.

The Pioneers shot 56.3% (27-of-48) from the field, 42.1% (8-of-19) behind the 3-point line, and a perfect 100% (11-of-11) from the charity stripe.  Denver out-rebounded the Spartans 31 – 28.

San Jose State travels to Las Cruces, NM to battle the New Mexico State on January 19.  Tip off is 6 pm Pacific time.
