The University of San Francisco Dons were decisively defeated by the Santa Clara Broncos 85 – 54 at War Memorial Gym. Reserve forward Matt Christiansen led the Dons (7 – 11, 0 – 5 WCC) with 12 points, followed with Cody Doolin and Mark Tollefsen with eight points each. Tollefsen led the Dons with five rebounds, with Cole Dickerson and Doolin chipping in four rebounds each.
USF shot 32.0% (16-of-50) from the field, 15.8% (3-of-19) behind the 3-point line, and 79.2% (19-of-24) from the free throw line. The Dons were out-rebounded 29 – 42.
The Broncos (13 – 6, 2 – 3 WCC) were led by Kevin Foster who poured in 27 points, followed by Raymond Cowels III (17 points) and Evan Roquemore (10 points). Marc Trasolini led the Broncos in rebounding with 11, while Foster notched a double-double with 10 rebounds. Roquemore dished out a game-leading five assists.
Santa Clara shot 50.8% (32-of-63) from the field, 46.7% (14-of-30) behind the 3-point arc, and 58.3% (7-of-12) from the free throw line.
The victory secured a regular season sweep of the Dons by the Broncos, and was the Broncos’ widest margin of victory in the series between the bay area rivals since the Broncos won at USF 88-50 on Feb. 15, 1989.
Santa Clara dominated every phase of the game, with Foster connecting on six treys, and the visiting Broncos controlling the glass.
Santa Clara travels to Malibu, CA to battle Pepperdine on January 19 for a 7 pm tip off (Pacific time).
USF hosts LMU in War Memorial Gym on January 19. Tip off is 1:30 pm Pacific time.
