Ryan Vogelsong and Jeremy Affeldt, two of the Giants most important pitchers from the rotation and bullpen, will join Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, which begins on March 2nd.

Reigning National League MVP, Buster Posey, denied an invitation to join the squad. Obviously, no big surprise here. I doubt there’s anyone in the Giants’ organization that wanted him to participate in this worldwide event. For one, as a catcher, he’s more susceptible to injury, and secondly, the season-ending leg injury that he suffered in 2011 is still somewhat fresh in the minds of Giants’ fans and management. Simply, it’s just not a risk worth taking.

Instead, Posey will spend the spring training with the Giants in Scottsdale, where Giants’ trainers will keep close watch over him again.

There are rumors that Sergio Romo may pitch for Mexico in the WBC. But like Posey, the Giants would prefer if Romo were to take it easy, especially after taking on a much bigger load in the playoffs.

Either way, he will also be watched closely regardless of whether he’s with Mexico or the Giants.

Remember, the WBC will eventually end up at AT&T Park, which will host the finals.
