Dons Defeated by Cross-Town Rival Gaels

The University of San Francisco Dons were defeated by cross-town rival St. Mary’s Gaels 78 – 72 in a West Coast Conference battle in McKeon Pavilion.

Cody Doolin led USF (7 – 10, 0 – 4 WCC) with 16 points, followed by De’End Parker’s 15 points off the bench.  Chris Adams chipped in nine points, while Matt Christiansen and Cole Dickerson added eight points each.  Tim Derksen and Dickerson led the Dons in rebounding with 6 boards each.  Doolin and Avry Holmes each had three assists.

USF shot 51.0 % (26-of-51) from the field, 50.0 % (9-of-18) behind the 3-point line, and 78.6 % (11-of-14) from the free throw line.  The Dons were out-rebounded  31 to 23.

Matthew Dellavedova (19 points) led a balanced Gaels’ scoring attack, along with Stephen Holt (16 points), Beau Levesque (15 points), and Mitchell Young (14 points).  Brad Waldow topped the Gaels in rebounding with seven boards, followed by Holt with five rebounds.  Young and Levesque each had four rebounds.  Dellavedova again led the Gaels in the assists category with six.

For the game,  St. Mary’s shot 50.0 % (25-of-50) from the field, only 23.5 % (4-of-17) behind the 3-point arc, but a stellar 88.9 % (24-of-27) from the charity stripe.

USF used a 19 – 8 spurt to close out the first half with a 36 – 35 lead.  But Dellavedova made a 3-pointer to start the second half and the Gaels would never relinquish the lead after that.   The game was close throughout the second half and its outcome was in question until the very end, when St. Mary’s iced the game by converting 9-of-10 free throws.

Both teams shot well from the field, and even though SMC could not knock down their 3-pointers with consistency, the Gaels more than made up for it by controlling the boards and converting on their free throws.

USF hosts Santa Clara on January 17.  Tip off is 8 pm Pacific time.

St. Mary’s travels to BYU January 16 for an 8 pm tip off (Pacific time).
