The University of San Francisco Dons were turned away by the visiting University of San Diego Toreros 70 – 66 in a West Coast Conference battle at War Memorial Gym.
Cody Doolin led USF (7 – 9, 0 – 3 WCC) with 19 points, followed by Tim Derksen (16 points), Cole Dickerson (11 points), and Chris Adams (9 points). Derksen led the Dons in rebounding with six boards, but Dickerson was limited to only five rebounds. Doolin dished out five assists to lead the Dons.
USF shot 45.3 % (24-of-53) from the field, 34.7 % (8-of-23) behind the 3-point line, and 66.7 % (10-of-15) from the free throw line. The Dons were out-rebounded 34 – 27.
USD (9 – 8, 2 – 0 WCC) was led by Johnny Dee (17 points), followed by reserve guard Cameron Miles (13 points), and Chris Anderson (10 points). Chris Manresa topped the Toreros in rebounding with nine boards, followed by Anderson with six rebounds. Anderson led the Toreros in the assists category with five.
For the game, USD shot 46.9 % (23-of-49) from the field, an eye-popping 50.0 % (11-of-22) behind the 3-point arc, and 68.4 % (13-of-19) from the charity stripe.
USD shot a blistering 60.7% from the field in the first half to take a commanding 46 – 32 lead at halftime. The Dons mounted a furious comeback to whittle the lead down to 53 – 52, but were never able to take the lead or tie the game in the second half. Miles iced the game with two clutch free throws for the final tally, but it was the Toreros’ prolific 3-point shooting which sealed the victory.
USF travels to Moraga to battle St. Mary’s on Saturday, January 12. Tip off is 8 pm.
