It is now less than a week before their first playoff game, and the San Francisco 49ers have yet to announce a starting kicker.

The struggling David Akers and the recently signed Billy Cundiff are in the process of “tryouts,” in what seems to be a bizarre situation for the 49ers.

Jim Harbaugh, as usual, did not reveal much in his press conference on Monday, but did say, ”We have a leader in the clubhouse, we’ll see how it goes today and tomorrow.”

He also said that Akers and Cundiff will be kicking at Candlestick Park today, to get a feel for how these kickers react to the strong winds. Cundiff, it should be noted, has yet to attempt a kick at Candlestick in his NFL career.

Smith Expected to Play

Defensive tackle Justin Smith is expected to play in Saturday’s tilt against Green Bay.

“We look forward to having him back in the lineup,” Harbaugh said.

Smith missed the final two regular season games with partially torn triceps, breaking his streak of playing in 185 straight games.
