While the 49ers prepare for next week’s Divisional Series match up against the Green Bay Packers, other teams are scrambling to put the pieces in place to get where they are.
According to the Assicoated Press, the New York Jets are the front-runner to land Tom Gamble. New York, who is in search for a new general manager, has spoken with a few others, but Gamble seems to be the guy they covet most.
Gamble, San Francisco’s director of players personnel, met with Jets’ brass over the weekend. Meanwhile, he canceled a second interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars and postponed a meeting with the San Diego Chargers until Tuesday. That is, if he doesn’t sign with New York before that date.
According to ESPN, Gamble told the Jaguars that he canceled the second interview in order to focus solely on the Jets, who are also looking at Marc Ross to fill their GM vacancy.
Here’s an excerpt for Adam Schefter’s report on ESPN:
The Jets received a glowing recommendation on Gamble from former NFL executive and current ESPN analyst Bill Polian, who worked as the Colts’ GM when Gamble was a college scout for the team.
In other words, it sounds like he’ll be at the helm of the Jets, but that’s wholly speculation based on reports. Still, the writing seems to be on the wall based on Gamble’s narrowed preferences. If the Jets spurn him, or vice versa, he has several other possibilities to filter through as well.
