Dons Host BYU in WCC Battle: Game Preview

The USF Dons host the BYU Cougars tonight in a WCC game at War Memorial Gym.  The Dons (7 – 7, 0 – 1 WCC) previously recorded a road loss to Santa Clara 74 – 69 on January 2.  BYU (11 – 4, 1 – 0 WCC) defeated LMU 92 – 51 in Provo, UT on January 3.

The Cougars are led in scoring by Tyler Haws (20.9 points per game) and Brandon Davies (19.5 ppg).  Matt Carlino chips in 8.1 ppg and leads the Cougars in assists averaging 4.0 apg.  Davies leads the Cougars in rebounding (8.0 rebounds per game), followed by Haws (5.4 rpg) and Josh Sharp (4.9 rpg).

BYU averages 79.0 ppg, shoots 45.4% from the field, 32.5% behind the 3-point line, and 73.9% from the free throw line.

Cole Dickerson leads the Dons in scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.9 rpg).  De’End Parker (14.1 ppg) and Cody Doolin (12.2 ppg) are the other leading scorers for USF.  Tim Derksen chips in 8.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg.  Doolin is the Dons’ leading playmaker with 6.29 apg.

USF averages 69.9 ppg, shoots 45.5% from the field, 39.0% behind the 3-point arc, and 64.3% from the charity stripe.

The Cougars want to keep the number of possessions high, so they will look to push the tempo.  Haws and Davies are a force down low, so interior defense from the Dons will be crucial.  Doolin will look to penetrate and dish to teammates as well as finishing at the rim.

Tip off is 7 pm Pacific time.
