The USF Dons lost to the BYU Cougars 80 – 76 in a tightly contested WCC match up at War Memorial Gym. The Cougars (12 – 4, 2 – 0 WCC) were led in the scoring column by Matt Carlino and Tyler Haws with 22 points each. Brock Zylstra chipped in 16 points, including 3-of-4 treys. Josh Sharp led the Cougars with ten rebounds while Carlino and Zylstra grabbed seven rebounds each. Carlino led the Cougars in assists with four, and also forced five steals on defense.
Cody Doolin and Cole Dickerson of the Dons (7 – 8, 0 – 2 WCC) scored 22 points each, followed by Tim Derksen and Chris Adams who scored nine points apiece. Cole Dickerson led the Dons in rebounding with nine boards, followed by Derksen with seven and reserve Mark Tollefsen with five. Cody Doolin led the Dons with 10 assists.
For the game, the Cougars shot 49.2 % (31-of-63) from the field, 38.9 % (7-of-18) behind the 3-point line, and 55 % (11-0f-20) from the free throw line. The Cougars out-rebounded the Dons 38 to 31.
USF shot 50.0 % (28-of-56) from the field, 45.8% (11-of-24) behind the 3-point arc, and 60.0 % (9-0f-15) from the charity stripe.
Down 46 – 37 at the half, BYU mounted a furious second half rally to overcome USF in the waning minutes. BYU used a 15 – 2 run, clamped down on defense, and dominated the glass to gain the lead, and held on with two free throws by Carlino to ice the game.
The Dons host the USD Toreros at War Memorial Gym on January 10. Tip off is 7 pm Pacific time.
