Despite 21 points from Allen Crabbe, the Cal Bears were unable to overcome a halftime deficit and lost 79-65 to the UCLA Bruins on the road.
Kyle Anderson had 19 to lead the Bruins. Two other starters, Shabazz Mohammed and Travis Wear, both finished in double-digits.
The Bears got off to a hot 6-0 start, only to see UCLA come storming back to take a 38-28 at halftime.
It seemed as if the quick start had wakened a dormant volcano, as the Bruins poured it on in the second half and led by 16 early. Cal tried its best and battled back, pulling to within four with 5:30 remaining.
But the Bruins finished on an 18-8 run to end all matters. Mohammed’s three-pointer put the Bruins up by double-digits again at 68-57 with 4:10 to play.
The Bears are now 0-1 in Pac-12 play and 8-5 overall. They will face USC on Saturday.
