Welcome to Golden Gate Sports’s live coverage of the Rose Bowl! The sixth seeded Cardinal enters the game with a dynamic offense that hopes to be the difference maker against the Badgers, who come into the game with the 12th ranked rushing offense.
Stayed tuned for analysis and updates!
One more thing: Taylor had 20 carries for 88 yards and a TD, earning offensive player of the game. Usua Amanam wins defensive player of the game with his pick.
That will do it from Pasadena! Thanks for joining us for the Rose Bowl live blog, and congratulations to the Stanford Cardinal, Rose Bowl Champs!
Way to end his career by Taylor. I’m certainly hoping for a lot out of him in the NFL. Hogan will only get better, and he could succeed in the pros too.
Nice way to end it by Shaw, obviously overexcited. And how could he not be? Stanford wins the Rose Bowl!
89 yards on 21 carries for Taylor without many holes opened up for him. Hogan was 12-for-19 with 123 yards passing. David Shaw gets his win, but he won’t do his interview.
Stanford wins the 99th Rose Bowl, 20-14.
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 2, 2013
That will do it! Taylor finishes off a defensive struggle!
Looks like that’ll do it. Stanford wins 20-14!
Hogan 5-0. Taylor finishes his career on a high note. Stanford has done it!
Taylor truly a great player, hard to bring down. Smaller version of Gerhart, almost.
#Badgers‘ Montee Ball becomes first player to rush for 100 yards in three different Rose Bowls #Pasathreena
— Badger Football (@BadgerFootball) January 2, 2013
Too bad they haven’t won any of them. Feel bad for Ball.
Taylor with a big run, almost picks up the first down.
First down will do it. Taylor has to get the ball here.
Maybe we should stop the Tebow comparisons. Wisconsin has two timeouts and is looking to be headed towards a loss.
Ball intercepted by Amanam. Cardinal will take over and try to run the clock down.
Badgers get lucky. Phillips time now. Stanford is expecting the run.
James White received the carry up the middle to pick up the first down.
Curt Tebow will deliver. It’s Phillips time
— Thomas Melton (@TMeltonScouting) January 2, 2013
Tebow is pretty clutch, isn’t he.
Nice run, we’ll see if the Badgers can convert on third down. Stanford has been great in this scenario all game.
Poor tackling by Stanford on that jet sweep, first down Wisconsin.
Wisconsin needs to be efficient on this drive.
Hogan had Ertz. Made a tougher throw than needed, looking for Toilolo.
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 2, 2013
Pressure catching up to the young signal-caller. Now, he’s just going to have to watch.
Jordan Williamson remains perfect in the Rose Bowl with a chip shot to make it 20-14. 4:23, 4th.
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 2, 2013
It has to be good to be him. It would have to make him REALLY happy if Stanford could win this.
Williamson drills it right down the middle from 22 yards out to extend their lead to 20-14.
Hogan continues to overthrow his receivers. Just when I thought he cured his woes.
Looks like the Cardinal will have to kick.
Great play call there by Stanford.
— Thomas Melton (@TMeltonScouting) January 2, 2013
Talking about the brilliant pitch to Wilkerson on third down.
Clock is about to run under 5 minutes, just like I said. A TD would probably end this.
Taylor stuffed in the backfield, but the clock keeps running…
Shaw finally getting creative like he was in the first quarter. Nice fake handoff and toss to Wilkerson for the first down.
Taylor should really be getting every carry. Will be interesting to see where he ends up in NFL.
The power run game is finally moving the ball downfield. Nice blocking on the run by Taylor.
Hogan ran again, but it’s helping now. Under eight minutes: long drive.
Hogan with a great read to keep the ball up the middle for a nice first down run.
Play will come back due to a block in the back.
Maybe Hogan will finally start to step up now. Not many throws, because he is taking off way too often. Nice throw there though.
Zach Ertz getting involved. Good call by Shaw to throw the ball around a little bit.
#Stanford opportunity to exhibit West Coast football thunder has turned into chess match. Good thing they can win those too.
— Monte Poole (@1MontePoole) January 2, 2013
Yeah, but we’d rather have offense.
Stanford first down, finally moving the ball into Badgers territory.
Taylor tells David Shaw why to use him on every play with that Gerhart-like run.
Taylor running wild on first down, carrying the defense for nine yards.
Cardinal NEED some points here, with good field position. A long TD drive would probably seal the game by giving the D rest and since Wisconsin has had nothing going on O, like Stanford.
Stanford will get some great field position with the extra penalty yardage.
Questions about DT position? @davidparry58 huge third-down solo stop at line of scrimmage vs. Montee Ball. #StanfordRBG13 #gostanford
— Stanford Football (@StanfordFball) January 2, 2013
Certainly a big stop. Now, some offense, please?
Wow, yet another stop. Both teams need to get creative!
Stanford has done a nice job stopping the run. Will it continue on 3rd and short?
Worst throwing game of Hogan’s Stanford career–by far
— Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) January 2, 2013
Definitely. Odd to see him rattled after dominating Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and UCLA (Pac-12 title).
Good effort by Taylor but the Cardinal will have to punt yet again. They need to establish a passing game to get the Badgers off of the run.
Getting Taylor in the game wouldn’t hurt.
Stanford’s last four drives: 22 yards, punt. -5, punt. 5, punt. 10, punt. #yawn
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 2, 2013
And yet they’re still winning.
Anthony Wilkerson shut down in the backfield for a big loss. Stanford’s offense needs to get a bit more creative.
Right as I say that, he misses a huge opportunity to score a touchdown. Will it kill the momentum?
Missed opportunity by Hogan, had Ty Montgomery wide open deep over the middle.
Finally, Stanford gets something out of Hogan. Hasn’t done anything since first half.
Hogan with a very nice first down run.
#gostanford offense has to do something here on this drive. Defense is going to get worn out.
— Chris Townsend (@townsendradio) January 2, 2013
Agreed. Wisconsin is getting going, and they will pound it in eventually.
The score remains 17-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Let’s see if either team can get some offense going.
Still waiting for the second half of the Rose Bowl to start. Longest. Halftime. Ever.
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 2, 2013
Agreed. We want some offense.
Disagree with the decision. In defensive struggle, you have to take some chances, especially when behind.
Curt Phillips just couldn’t get away from Alex Carter for the first down. Great play by the young cornerback. Another punt coming.
Josh Mauro in the backfield for the five yard loss.
Great jump on the ball Stanford’s defensive line.
Badgers are taking my advice. We’ll see how they call their plays and if they can at least tie this thing up.
Wisconsin gets a first down on the quick slant, and no they should be trying to run the ball. Phillips is showing that he is a threat.
Once again, @badgerfootball does its job on defense forcing a punt after giving up one first down. Wisconsin will begin at its own 27.
— Rose Bowl Game (@rosebowlgame) January 2, 2013
Can they do something this time? Nothing so far: 3rd and 3
Ball getting those tough yards between the tackles. Stanford’s front seven looking strong.
Field position game, as Herbstreit just said. Stanford has to punt it away to Abbrederis.
Stanford’s offense once again fails to get anything going. They’ll have to punt yet again.
That Wisconsin drive of four plays, 16 yards = longest by either team this half. #StanfordRBG13 #gostanford
— Stanford Football (@StanfordFball) January 2, 2013
We want offense!
Holding, Hogan’s run will come back.
Who put butter on everyone’s fingers?
Another lucky break for the Cardinal with the missed interception on the dropped pass.
First first down of the half for Stanford. Taylor carries up the middle.
Hogan nice run for the first down.
Looks like the Cardinal will catch a break, the call was running into the kicker rather than roughing the kicker. No automatic first down.
Big mistake by Stanford running into the kicker.
If #Stanford can’t get fired up after S Jordan Richards lays out WR Chase Hammond with a Ronnie Lott `woo lick,’ Rose Bowl stays tight.
— Monte Poole (@1MontePoole) January 2, 2013
They could definitely use this as momentum.
Another pass deflected, this one by Henry Anderson.
Jordan Richards just went Dashon Goldson.
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 2, 2013
Big hit by Jordan Richards.
Looks like the Wisconsin receiver is still down. Hopefully he’s alright.
HUGE hit by Jordan Richards.
QB Curt Phillips of @badgerfootball gets the first first down of the half with his legs. 13-yard run for Wisconsin.
— Rose Bowl Game (@rosebowlgame) January 2, 2013
Phillips breaks the three-and-outs trend.
White running between the tackles, I wonder why Ball didn’t get that carry.
— Thomas Melton (@TMeltonScouting) January 2, 2013
He can throw, too.
Curt Phillips showing some surprising mobility. Interesting to see Wisconsin looking deep on first down.
Both offenses have been shut down. 4 straight four-and-outs.
The middle screen to Terrell shut down by the Badgers, four punts total already in the second half.
Hogan is so elusive in the pocket, sometimes he keeps the play alive for too long.
Not much going on offense for either team so far this half. Hogan needs to get back to his first quarter form.
If Wisconsin scores on this drive, do they suddenly deserve to be in the Rose Bowl?
— Jeremy Balan (@jeremybalan) January 2, 2013
Maybe. Stanford may not deserve it for playing so tightly with an 8-5 team.
Stanford defense looking sharp. It may just take one more score to make this lead hold up, the way they are going.
Ball on the sideline again. Terrence Brown absolutely crushed James White in the backfield to force another punt.
Timeout on the field.
Cardinal are looking for the run. It’s going to be up to Phillips to make some plays if Wisconsin is going to win this game.
Ball once again shut down at the line. Stanford’s front seven is looking good.
Wow Devin Smith almost had that.
— Thomas Melton (@TMeltonScouting) January 2, 2013
Stanford catches a break, that’s for sure. Hogan needs to step up.
Back-to-back three-and-outs to start the half.
Lucky break for Stanford on the dropped interception. They’ll still have to punt.
False start will but the Cardinal back, third and long on first series of the half.
Pretty terrible offensive series by Wisconsin to open the 2nd half, Stanford defense big reason why.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) January 2, 2013
The defense certainly stepped up.
Good long drive to start out the 2nd half Wisconsin.
— Thomas Melton (@TMeltonScouting) January 2, 2013
I detect a hint of sarcasm.
Taylor stopped at the line on first down.
Wisconsin scored w/ :19 left in 1st half. Since 2005, WIS is 22-0 in gms w/ a TD drive in final 3 minutes of 1st half (2-0 this season).
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) January 2, 2013
Interesting. But not looking good after the punt.
Screen dropped by James White, huge opening stop for the Stanford defense in the second half.
Pass deflected by Ben Gardner, he’s having a huge game.
Stanford stuffs Ball for no gain on first down. They need to keep that up if they want to slow Wisconsin’s momentum.
151 rushing yards for the Badgers. Expect a lot more of that in the second half, just like Kirk Herbstreit says.
Badgers back to receive, that TD before the half was huge for them.
Chris Fowler just announced that the last time a team that trailed at half time came back to win in the Rose Bowl was the last time these two teams squared off…
If #Stanford did not get hosed by refs at #NotreDame, they probably would have been in #BCSChampionship game with road win at ND & #Oregon.
— Roxy Bernstein (@roxybernstein) January 1, 2013
That’s true. But a Rose Bowl would be fine.
Stanford led 14-0 in last year’s Fiesta Bowl too before losing in OT. Cardinal takes a 17-14 lead into the half. #RoseBowl
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 1, 2013
Not a bad point. Scary for Stanford fans.
Uh oh. It’s halftime and the Stanford band is doing some sort of tribute to cheeses.
— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) January 1, 2013
Hogan 6-for-9, 90 yards passing. Taylor 9 carries for 44 yards and a TD. Both will be HUGE in the second half.
Can anyone confirm that the Wisconsin fans just started booing Stanford’s band? Or did I just imagine that?
— Thomas Melton (@TMeltonScouting) January 1, 2013
Maybe they did. I’m sure Cal fans would act differently, though.
.@lsjumb takes the field for a second time to perform halftime show. #gostanford #stanfordrbg13
— Stanford Football (@StanfordFball) January 1, 2013
Good to see there’s some entertainment there.
#Stanford leads #Wisconsin 17-14 at half at Rose Bowl. Whether Cardinal regains control depends on usage of TB Stepfan Taylor.
— Monte Poole (@1MontePoole) January 1, 2013
That is correct. Taylor is the X-factor for the Cardinal.
As the #RoseBowl reaches halftime, it seems as though #Wisconsin has the momentum swinging their way, but #Stanford still leads 17-14.
— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) January 1, 2013
Shaw takes the headset off. It’s halftime in the Rose Bowl, 17-14. 30 minutes away from a Rose Bowl win for Stanford, but it will be far from easy! Stay tuned for updates and analysis.
219 yards for both teams, and it’s been a tight one. Both teams have to feel good as Stanford gives the ball to Taylor for a few yards.
Kickoff is booted out of the end zone. Expecting a kneel down from Stanford as they trot onto the field with the ball at the 20.
AJ Tarpley will dream about getting another shot at that play.
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 1, 2013
Yes. Yes, he will.
PAT is good. Stanford has 19 seconds, and we’re going to expect a kneel.
They are going to review this, but it has to stand. It will be 17-14 with the Badgers starting the second half with the ball. Tight game we got here!
Jordan Frederick makes the catch on a nice, quick throw by Phillips! Wisconsin is back in this game!
Touchdown Badgers!
Another handoff, and Ball gets to about the 4. 24 seconds left, and timeout taken by the Badgers. None left.
Ball takes a carry from the 7 for a yard or two.
In between two defenders, a dropped pick that landed in the hands of TE Sam Arneson! Wow! What a play, and it’s 1st and goal with 54 seconds in the half!
Phillips pass caught over the middle!
James White catches a short pass from Phillips. 3rd and about 3.
Could have gone out of bounds with a 1st down at the 50. Kept going, as Abbrederis made a great block. Richards made the TD-saving tackle, and the Badgers are in position to make it a one-score game.
Phillips takes off for a HUGE run! Down at the Stanford 22!
Curt Phillips makes a nice throw to hit Abbrederis. First down inside the Wisconsin 40.
Ball continues to pound the Cardinal. Time running down, but a first down at the 29.
Last time @tigerwoods was on sidelines for #Stanford football game things did not go well for him or the team.2009 Big Game. @calfootball
— Roxy Bernstein (@roxybernstein) January 1, 2013
The one bad thing you can remember Andrew Luck doing in college.
Ball with a nice hard five-yard run. 2nd and 5.
Badgers starting at their own 15, trying to make it a one-score game with 2:23 before halftime.
Fair catch by Jared Abbrederis.
Hogan broke a few tackles behind the line of scrimmage, but came up just short at the 45-yard line. 4th down, because of good pressure by Chris Ash.
Great job by Hogan to avoid pressure, but he’s short of the first down.
Hogan throwing high. He overshot Ty Montgomery on a pass that would have got the Cardinal about five yards. 3rd and 11.
Wilkerson loses about a yard on the screen pass from Hogan.
Ricky Wagner just fell down trying to block Chase Thomas as he spun back inside on that play.
— Thomas Melton (@TMeltonScouting) January 1, 2013
Chase Thomas is a pretty good player.
Hogan playfakes and throws deep. Incomplete, but PI on Wisconsin!
Fair catch by Terrell, Stanford starts around their own 35-yard line.
Screen pass to Ball stopped short of the 1st down! Stanford forces a punt, on a nice play by Shayne Skov.
That FG by Williamson was one yard shy of Stanford’s bowl record (48 yds, Steve Horowitz ’71 @rosebowlgame). StanfordRBG13 #gostanford
— Stanford Football (@StanfordFball) January 1, 2013
Still good thoguh!
The kick from Williamson fourth longest in #Rosebowl history. He’s erasing some of the bad memories from last year’s Fiesta Bowl.
— Stanford Daily Sport (@StanfordSports) January 1, 2013
Jet sweep stopped by Stanford! Jordan Richards, the sophomore, on the stop. 3rd and 11.
Ball loses one yard on the 1st down play. 2nd and 11.
Good coverage by Stanford! Wisconsin will start at their own 15-yard line.
The scoring drive by @stanfordfball went seven plays covering 47 yards in 2:42.
— Rose Bowl Game (@rosebowlgame) January 1, 2013
We’re back. Wisconsin will receive the kickoff.
Tiger Woods and Condoleezza Rice are at every #Stanford game I watch on TV, it seems.
— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) January 1, 2013
Looked like it was going wide, and curled back inwards. Good kick by the guy who is remembered in Palo Alto for a bad kick last year.
47-yarder by Williamson is…good!
Hogan overshot Ertz on 3rd down! Huge 4th down here. Would be a 48 or 49 yard field goal.
Tiger Woods watching the 3rd and 5 play!
If Montgomery cuts that back all the way to the left, it’s a touchdown.
— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) January 1, 2013
Pointing out the negatives here.
Hogan calls timeout right before the play clock expires. Two left for Stanford, 6:28 in the 2nd quarter.
Screen pass to Montgomery down to the 31-yard line. 3rd and 5!
Ty Montgomery made the catch. The 1st and 10 play was incomplete, with good pressure from the Badgers D.
First down on a nice pass by Hogan.
Wilkerson takes the wildcat from the 42 to midfield.
Great blocking, huge hole.
Big run by Wilkerson for a first down!
RB Montee Ball of @badgerfootball needs just one more TD today to set the NCAA’s multi-touchdown record for a career.
— Rose Bowl Game (@rosebowlgame) January 1, 2013
Badgers are hoping to keep momentum going after stop and TD. A long drive is key for the Cardinal here.
Montee Ball 11y TD puts #Wisconsin on the board. #Stanford up 14-7 9:05 before halftime. Time now for Cardinal offense to adjust.
— Monte Poole (@1MontePoole) January 1, 2013
Got that right. Stanford needs to step it up.

Wisconsin is on the board with an 11-yard TD run.
— James Williams (@JWilliams029) January 1, 2013

3rd & 8: Taylor rushes for no yards
PENALTY Stanford: -3 yards

Way to overthink that one Wisconsin. 4th and goal from inside the one-yard line and you set up your runner five yards back? Dumb. #RoseBowl
— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) January 1, 2013
4th & Goal: Badgers fail to score
It is indeed coming back.
This one is coming back.Which means Ball can add to his record touchdown total.
— Scott Reiss (@ScottReissCSN) January 1, 2013
Looks like he was down, may be coming back.
Phillips pass completion to the middle to Pedersen for 10 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.
3rd & Goal: TOUCHDOWN
2nd & Goal: Ball 3-yard rush
1st & Goal: Ball 5-yard rush
NO TOUCHDOWN- Holding on Badgers
