Justin Smith’s injury is a lot more serious than most people thought.
An anonymous source tells the Sacramento Bee that the 49ers’ defensive tackle has partially torn triceps, which will require surgery in the off-season.
Smith suffered the injury against the New England Patriots on December 16, and missed much of the fourth quarter. He did not play last week in Seattle, where the 49ers took a 42-13 beating at the hands of the Seahawks.
The Bee reports that “Smith and the 49ers are hoping he can tolerate the pain enough to be effective during the playoffs.” He will likely miss the season finale against the Cardinals, but if the 49ers get that first round bye, he could be ready to play in the divisional round of the postseason.
Smith, an All-Pro defensive tackle, had played in 185 consecutive games before sitting out last Sunday’s matchup in Seattle.
